From Capitals to Coastlines: Our 16-Day Road Trip Through Croatia, Slovenia & Italy
If you love medieval hill towns, easy seaside days, and a good road trip soundtrack, this route is for you. We began in Zagreb, looped through Slovenia (Lake Bled + Vintgar Gorge, Ljubljana), nipped into Italy (Trieste), then slid into Croatia’s Istrian peninsula (Motovun, Poreč with a Rovinj day trip, Pula), before turning inland to Plitvice Lakes, and coasting down to Zadar and Šibenik. We kept one rental car the entire time—simple, flexible, and perfect for spontaneous detours.

Good to Know Before You Go (Cars & Borders)
- One rental car, three countries: Confirm cross-border permission and carry the insurer’s “green card.”
- Tolls & Vignettes:
- Croatia – pay-as-you-go toll booths
- Slovenia = motorway vignette ⭐ See our post on how and where to get the vignette⭐
- Italy = toll booths.
- Old towns: Plan to park on the edge (e.g., Piran, Motovun, Rovinj) and walk in.
- Navigation: Download offline maps. Some hill villages and coastal lanes get spotty service.
Day 1–2: Zagreb, Croatia
Shake off the flight with espresso in Gornji Grad and a wander past St. Mark’s colourful roof. Zagreb pairs café culture with easy sightseeing.
Where we stayed: Hotel Jägerhorn (historic, central, quiet courtyard).
Luxury upgrade: Esplanade Zagreb Hotel
Budget pick: Hostel Bureau
Day 3: Lake Bled, Slovenia
Fairytale lake, island church, a loop walk, and yes—Bled cream cake.
Where we stayed: Garni Hotel Berc – ⭐ See our post under Favourite Stays!⭐
Luxury upgrade: Grand Hotel Toplice
Budget pick: Bled Hostel
Optional stop : Vintgar Gorge
On the way toward Ljubljana, walk the boardwalks of Vintgar Gorge—turquoise water, little cascades, and an easy, scenic trail. ⭐Check out our visit to Vintgar Gorge!⭐

Days 4–6: Ljubljana, Slovenia
We based ourselves in a vacation rental so we could do laundry ~15 minutes’ walk from the centre—quiet at night, a pleasant stroll by day. Ljubljana is wonderfully walkable: riverfront cafés, the castle funicular, open-air markets, and leafy bridges.
Where we stayed: Exclusive Central Apartment (15-minute walk to centre)
Luxury upgrade: InterContinental Ljubljana
Budget pick: B&B Hotel Ljubliana Park
Day 7: Predjama Castle → Trieste, Italy
En route to Italy, ⭐ stop at Predjama Castle ⭐, dramatically wedged into a cliff face. We skipped the caves (great for families if you have time) and continued to Trieste for coffee culture, grand piazzas, and Adriatic views.
Where we stayed: The Modernist Hotel (sleek, central).
Luxury upgrade: Savoia Excelsior Palace
Budget pick: Hotello Hostel

Day 8: Piran, Slovenia
Sea-washed, Venetian, and wonderfully car-free—park outside and wander in for sunset.
Where we stayed: Hotel Piran (right on the water; dreamy rooftop).
Luxury upgrade: Barbara Piran Beach Hotel & Spa
Budget pick: Hostel Piran
Days 9–10: Motovun, Croatia (Istria)
Istria’s hilltop jewel. Morning mist, stone lanes, slow dinners, and valley views for days. A perfect base for Grožnjan (artist village) and Hum (tiny, charming).
Where we stayed: Villa Borgo (terrace views; warm hospitality).
Luxury upgrade: Boutique Hotel Kastel
Budget pick: Villa Luna
Days 11–12: Poreč, with a Day Trip to Rovinj
We stayed in an Airbnb a 10-minute walk from Poreč’s centre—easy for evening strolls and basilica visits. Take a day trip to Rovinj for pastel alleys, harbour light, and gelato breaks. You could absolutely stay in Rovinj instead if you’re more seaside-leaning.
Where we stayed: Lovely 1 Bedroom Near Center – AirBNB (Poreč, walkable to old town)
Luxury upgrade (Poreč): Boutique Hotel Mauro
Budget pick (Poreč): Hotel Poreč

Day 13: Pula → Plitvice Lakes
In Pula, our vacation rental overlooked the Roman Arena—golden hour is magic here. From Pula, head inland to ⭐Plitvice Lakes National Park⭐ for boardwalks, turquoise pools, and cascades. It’s a longer drive day, but worth it.
Where we stayed (Pula): Ancora Center Apartment – Absolutely stunning views of the Arena!
Luxury upgrade: Boutique Hotel Oasi
Budget pick: Hotel Amfiteatar

Days 14–15: Zadar, Croatia
Stone-smooth streets, Roman bits and bobs, and evenings listening to the Sea Organ as the Sun Salutation glows beside it.
Where we stayed: Teatro Verdi Boutique Hotel (intimate, walkable).
Luxury upgrade: Bastion Heritage Hotel
Budget pick: Boutique Hostel Forum
Days 16+: Šibenik, Croatia (Gateway to Dalmatia & the Islands)
Šibenik was our perfect pivot point into island days and coastal rambles. Don’t miss the Cathedral of St. James and a fortress view or two.
Where we stayed: Armerun Heritage Hotel & Residence (heritage style on the water).
Luxury upgrade: D-Resort Šibenik
Budget pick: Hostel Globo
