As a family with young adults who aren’t particularly into biking, we weren’t sure what to expect from the Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail, but our experience was incredible! The trail is perfect for all types of riders, and even though we’re not avid cyclists, we had a fantastic time.
We signed up for a guided tour, which made the whole experience super easy and stress-free. The tour took us to the starting point at Myra Canyon, where we hopped on our bikes and rode the scenic route down to Penticton. The 18 km ride was stunning, with gentle grades and well-maintained gravel paths. Along the way, we were surrounded by breathtaking views of trestle bridges, tunnels, and the lush Okanagan Valley. It was a relaxed, enjoyable ride, and there were plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos.
The trail is family-friendly, and while our “kids” are young adults, I can definitely see families with younger children enjoying it too. The gentle terrain, coupled with the incredible scenery, makes it perfect for riders of all ages and skill levels. Although we didn’t use e-bikes, they’re available if you’d like an extra boost to make the ride easier.
The Kettle Valley Rail Trail has a rich history that made the ride even more special. Originally built as a railway in the early 1900s, the route helped connect remote areas of British Columbia. It was a vital part of the region’s growth, but by the 1960s, the railway was decommissioned. Today, the trail preserves the history of that bygone era, and along the way, you can spot remnants of the old railway, including the iconic trestle bridges and tunnels.
The guided tour included transportation, so once we finished our ride in Penticton, the guide picked us up and brought us back to Myra Canyon. This made the whole day much more relaxing since we didn’t have to worry about the logistics of parking or figuring out how to get back.
If you’re looking for a beautiful, family-friendly biking adventure with stunning views and a touch of history, the Kettle Valley Rail Trail is a must. The Myra Canyon to Penticton route is perfect for riders of all ages, and with a guided tour, you can enjoy the ride without any worries. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned cyclist, this trail has something for everyone!
